What happened at the meeting

On Thursday 9th December we successfully held the Club’s AGM (at the second attempt). We reviewed the 2021 season and announced our Club awards.

The Fred Cole Cup is presented to the member who has most typified Club or team spirit in the year. For 2021 this was awarded to Abdur Razzaq our 1st XI captain who worked hard to ensure that the 1st XI was a team where all players recognised that they had a part to play in achieving for the Club.

The Burn Bullock Tankard is presented to the member who has rendered the greatest service to the Club in the year. In 2021 we were pleased to see more parents get involved with supporting the junior section, but one contribution stood out from the crowd – that of James Pyemont. Not only did James take on a coaching role, but also regularly helped with setting up and clearing away the sessions each week. James has also agreed to manage the new U10 team for 2022. For all of this James has been awarded the Burn Bullock Tankard 2021.

The Pat Batty Award is made for performance on the field and is selected by the senior players. In 2021 this award went to Haris Qureshi – recognising his 639 runs for the 1st XI at an average of 39 and including a 108 not out. In addition Haris has contributed to team performance in the field taking 13 wickets in catches and run outs.

The Hazel Sanders Medal is presented to the most improved female player. In 2021 the medal was awarded to Avni Shah, recognising the improvement in both batting and bowling she has achieved through her commitment to training – and she was top scorer in our end of season festival.

Also recognised for his contribution to the Club was our Club President David M Smith. He first played for Mitcham as a junior and represented us at senior level before going on to play for Surrey, Worcestershire and Sussex and England. This long connection and his active role as our President since 2018 has now been acknowledged with Life Membership of our Club.

Congratulations to all the award winners.

The AGM also elected officers to key roles in the Club for 2022.

New Life Member David M Smith was re-elected as President.

The honour of Vice President was bestowed for the first time to three loyal members and former players – Jeff Southgate. Bob Tookey and Richard Crompton.

Pat Batty Award winner Haris Qureshi was elected Club and 1st XI Captain for 2022. He will be supported by Shreyash Patel as his Vice Captain.

Julia Gault was re-elected as Sapphires Captain to continue to lead our ladies and girls section; and will be supported again by Vasi Selvachandran as Vice Captain.
We wish them a successful 2022 season.

Unfortunately we did not have nominations for the other senior team captains and vice captains so there will need to be another Extraordinary General Meeting in the Spring to confirm these.

The other roles on the executive were confirmed – with re-election of current holders in most cases. We will be welcoming a new Hon Fixtures Secretary – Imran Khan. We are grateful for the ongoing commitment and service of the members of our Club Executive.
