The Club was saddened to learn of the passing of one of its finest all round cricketers Clive Peacock, who died just a few weeks before his 91st birthday, on the 13th March 2025.
Clive was an integral part of Mitcham CC from 1959 until well into the 1990s. He joined us from Bec Old Boys where he had established a high reputation as a classy opening batsman and as a medium quick bowler. During this time he had received representative honours in playing for the Surrey Young Amateurs (later to become the Surrey Young Cricketers), and also representing the Evening News Colts.
Clive was a member of our 1st XI for 18 years, proving to be a most astute judge of situations and a most consistent and reliable performer with both bat and ball. He also captained our 2nd XI and played for our 3rd XI on occasion. During his career Clive proved to be one of the leading all-rounders on the Surrey circuit with his bowling skills coming to the fore.
He was proud to be a member of the 1st XI that gained four Championship honours in the 1970s . Clive was also in our team which won the Surrey Knock Out Cup at the Oval in 1978 - Clive was awarded the “Man of the Day” pennant and champagne for his performance that day.
In appreciation of his good work for our Club, Clive was made a vice president, a thoroughly deserved honour, and was subsequently awarded life membership.
As his playing career was coming to an end Clive became a fully qualified coach at the advanced level, initially coaching at Mitcham and then coaching youngsters around the County with clinics at the Oval and some sessions held at Lords. He also decided to move into umpiring and again in his meticulous way, he qualified fully and was later invited to be a member of the Surrey Championship Elite Panel.
The Club’s heartfelt sympathy is extended to his wife Jackie and their sons Gavin and Ken (both of whom played for us), and also to their extended family.
A fuller valedictory for Clive will appear in our Fixture Booklet for 2025
