Cheam beaten in the gloom

The under 16s finished their season with another impressive win against a competitive Cheam side on the Green.

The visitors batted first having won the toss and lost the first wicket in the first over when Shafan took an amazing catch off his own bowling from a ricochet from his foot! Mitcham's bowlers kept the run rate under 6 an over with only the excellent Nash (36) and Ansh (13) making double figures. Shamali (3-8) bowled excellently and took two great catches, Farrukh on debut took a brilliant 3 for 10 and the spinners Raess and Hammad took three wickets between them.

In fading light Cheam's 94 all out looked like a big total when Mitcham were 0 for 2 in the 3rd over. Haydon's spin tempted Faraz into a slog, while Dhruv was beaten by a great in-swinger from Nash. But the left-handers Bilal (42*) and Sami (21) put Mitcham on top with a 79 run stand for the 3rd wicket. The pair hit 4 sixes and 6 fours and with the help of Shamali's quick fire 10 the home side made the target with five overs to spare as night fell.

The win means the under16s end the season with an excellent record of 6 wins and 1 defeat in 7 completed games. No team in the league won as many games as Mitcham, but the title rightly goes to Trinity Mid Whitgiftians who beat the boys in a tight game in July. But second in the table ahead of much bigger clubs such as Spencer, Old Ruts and Cheam is a great achievement.
