1. F C Holland

Fred Holland was born and brought up in Batterea, but during his playing career with Surrey he lived in or close to Mitcham. This forged a long association with the Club. For many years he gave a bat to the outstanding Mitcham schoolboy cricketer of the year.

Fred made his debut for Surrey at the age of 18 in 1894. He made an impressive start, scoring a graceful 76 in his first innings, against Essex at Leyton.

In his first full season, 1895, Surrey retained the County Championship and Fred contributed 832 runs at an average 33.28. It was written about him at this time,

His batting in the earlier matches as been so consistently fine as to place him at one bound in quite the front rank of Surrey players.

His form was to fall off a little in 1896 and 1897 but he had another good year in 1898, more than a thousand runs at 34.25. He was not so successful again, but even in his last 4 years 1905-8 kept an average in the upper 20s.

In his last season 1908 he put on 308 with Jack Crawford for the 5th wicket against Somerset, a Surrey record which stood for nearly a hundred years.

Over his career as a whole he scored 10,384 runs in 284 first class matches at an average of 25.6, including 12 hundreds. He exceeded 1000 runs in a season 4 times

Fred Holland died at the age of 80 in 1957.
